TiVo and "Swang"

May 24, 2006 · 1 Comment

First off: I ordered TiVo today. The receiver, usually priced at $219, was a whopping $0.00. Yes, that’s right. They’re giving the darned things away! (Of course, you have to sign up for a service agreement, but when don’t you these days?)

Second off: on the way home from the varsity lacrosse dinner tonight, we listened to XM in the Jetta. This song was playing on one of the “Urban” stations. We had a good time rockin’ to the beats…of the swang.

A Sunset and a T.V.

Here’s a picture, taken from my back deck, of Sunday night’s sunset. The photo has not been retouched in any way. Nice, eh?

And here’s a picture of my new t.v. Equally nice, eh?

Good News…and Bad News

May 9, 2006 · 1 Comment

As always, in the music biz (as in life), the good and the bad come together.

First, the bad:

“The Go-Betweens’ McLennan Dies at 48″ (from Rolling Stone)

You should download 16 Lovers’ Lane if you don’t have it already:

Now, the good:

Do the words “Produced by Brian Eno & Mixed by Tchad Blake” do anything for you? No? Well, a listen to “Outrageous” will change your mind. This album is absolutely stunning. I’ve never quite heard anything like it, and Paul has never quite been pushed to make anything like it. An essential release from an essential artist.

"Belong"

May 1, 2006 · No Comments

A few years ago, we put together our own spring musical here at Rectory. It was called “WAYTA?” (”What Are You Talking About?”), and was crafted by Bev and Marita, with some songs by me and some skits and scenes by the students. I wrote two songs for the original “WAYTA?”; now, I am pleased to present a song from next year’s production, “WAYTA…N?” (”What Are You Talking About…Now?”) The track is called “Belong,” and it’s about the fact that we all go through life thinking that there’s no one who understands us…when, in reality, we’re all in the same boat.

“Belong” (3.3 MB, AAC)

I wish I had some more friends
Someone to share my time with
It’s really, really hard when they say you don’t belong

I wish I had some more time
Another partner in crime
It’s really, really hard when they say you don’t belong

There’s got to be some people out there like me
There’s got to be some faces who see what I see
But I’m the kind of person, yeah you know me…
It’s hard
To be

I wish I knew some people
Who treat me like I’m equal
It’s really, really hard when they say you don’t belong

It’s really, really hard when they say you don’t…
(I wish I had some more friends)

Instruments: lead and backing vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, programming, DX-7 (for Jackie!), percussion
Composed by Ben Gott

Let me know what you think!
