"Bluebeard" Now on YouTube!

December 31, 2006 · No Comments

“Bluebeard” is now embedded. Yeah, I know. But it’s easier than downloading. What can I say? I had a change of heart.

Here’s the original description:

This special holiday version of “Live from the iSight Studio” features a cover of Cocteau Twins’ “Bluebeard.” Why? Because it’s the greatest song in the universe, that’s why.

Blog Facelift Like Sting’s Nosejob

December 27, 2006 · No Comments

I hope you enjoy the recent changes to loquaciousmusic.com. As you can see, there are more links to bands I love in the column on the right-hand side. (Each of these links will open in a new window, so you’ll never have to leave the warm, gooey comfort of this site!) I’ve also added both .pdf and .doc versions of my résumé, which you can read if you want a good laugh. Additionally, there’s a link to the Insight Garden Program, my sister’s new non-profit organization. You should visit her site and SEND MONEY!!!!!

As I mentioned below, there will hopefully be a lot more of my new music on the site this spring, including “Ben Gott Sings Like a Girl,” a five-song E.P. of cover songs originally written by THE LADIEZ, word.

Boston, Marlborough, home, back to work. More from the road…

Merry Christmas, and R.I.P. James Brown

December 25, 2006 · No Comments

Merry Christmas, everyone! As your Christmas gift, here is one of Peter Guralnick’s finer passages from Last Train to Memphis. It’s about the initial criticism (which surfaced in the late spring of 1956) of Elvis Presley’s look and act, described by most American newspapermen in stinging, derogatory terms:

It seemed as if all the pent-up forces of puritanism and repression had been unleashed simultaneously to discover in rock ‘n’ roll the principal source of America’s growing moral decadence and the world’s ills. What hurt [Elvis] most of all were the denunciations from the pulpit, but even the newspaper articles stung. He said for the record that the critics had a right to their opinions, they were only doing their job, and Elvis was always the first to disparage himself and his talents—but it wasn’t fair. He didn’t drink, he didn’t smoke (except for the little cigarillo Hav-a-tampas that he increasingly enjoyed, though not in public), he did his best to make sure that the boys [in his band] always conducted themselves like gentlemen. It wasn’t supposed to matter how you looked.

On a related note: rest in peace, James Brown. You were a legend and will always be remembered. As a tribute, check out Tom Tom Club’s “Genius of Love” (a song about the Godfather of Soul), or just go to iTunes and download everything you can get your hands on.

Elvis Hasn’t Left the Building

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy New Year!

I’m chillin’ in Salisbury for a few days, then I’m driving my sister to Boston, then I’m hanging out in Marlborough, then I’m heading to Paul and Jackie’s for New Year’s. Whew! A big change may be in the pipeline — keep your eye on this blog over the next few months to see what’s what.

Right now, I’m obsessing over Peter Guralnick’s biographies of Elvis Presley, Last Train to Memphis and Careless Love. They’re two of the finest musical biographies I’ve ever read. In fact, they may be two of the finest biographies of any sort I’ve ever read.

Scroll down a post and check out “Bluebeard.” There will be more — lots more — on the way this spring, if I can get my act together. Let’s be optimistic, folks! C’mon!
